About the SMS Sender ID Register
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) established the SMS Sender ID Register under Part 24B of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The Register protects Australians from SMS impersonation by verifying sender names used in text messages.
- Effective 1 July 2026: unregistered sender IDs will show as Unverified.
- Who must register: any entity sending SMS with a custom sender name.
Who Can Apply
The following entities can register sender IDs:
- Individuals
- Companies / bodies corporate
- Government entities
- Partnerships, trusts, or unincorporated associations
- Superannuation funds
Valid Use Case
Your sender ID must clearly relate to your organisation. Accepted forms include:
- Registered business name or abbreviation
- Company name
- Registered trade mark
- Domain name you own
Optional descriptive words may be added (e.g. Brand-Alert, Brand-Vic).
How to Register
ABN Entities (Australian)
- The requester must be an authorised ABN contact or have written authority.
- Complete identity verification.
- Apply through a participating provider like Sological Pty Ltd.
- ACMA will send access instructions to confirm registration.
- Once approved, you can authorise other providers to use your sender ID.
Non-ABN Entities (including overseas)
Must apply through a certified telecommunications provider or its partner. Identity and recognition checks are required. Non-ABN entities cannot access the Register portal directly.
Fees
Registration and ongoing fees (if applicable) via Sological Pty Ltd:
- We do not charge any fees for sender ID registration.
Key Dates
- Now: Sender ID registration available through participating providers.
- 30 Nov 2025: Providers must publish Register information.
- 1 Jul 2026: Unregistered sender IDs labelled Unverified.
